I had an amazing time teaching alongside photographer Sue Bryce on CreativeLIVE in October 2013. It was a year after my first course with CL and I think I was more nervous this time around!
The course was based on experimental portraiture – something that I think lends itself to many of us who are starting out and trying to find our path, or perhaps even trying to re-invent ourselves. On the course both me and Sue went back into our early beginnings as photographers – me as a self-portrait turned conceptual photographer and her as a fine-art photographer. I definetly felt like I let a lot of my guards down when I was talking about the struggles in the beginning and Sue gave some incredibly inspiring talks on motivation and believing in yourself. I think for me the highlight was giving Sue the chance to see her beauty in the photo-shoot I did with her (talk about being nervous!) we did a ‘reveal’ wall where Sue saw her photographs for the first time. I will admit I was kind of emotional watching her reaction!
After the workshop I felt inspired to put some old techniques and practices back into my workflow and to go back to simplicity when it comes to shooting – it’s easy to get caught up in wanting to have a lot of creatives on set and everything ‘perfect’ in a commercial industry – so it was a nice reminder.
